Wondery’s The Grinch podcast adaptation gets renewed for second series

Second season is slated to premiere in late 2024

Amazon-owned podcast company Wondery has ordered a second season of its ‘Tis The Grinch Holiday Podcast, an adaptation of the Dr. Seuss children’s novel, following the success of the podcast’s initial launch.

The podcast stars Saturday Night Live comedian and actor James Austin Johnson as the character of the Grinch, reimagined as the host of a traditional talk-show. Season one of the series has featured a number of celebrity guests including singer Meghan Trainor, Olympic medalist Shawn Johnson East, pro wrestler Cody Rhodes, and more.

Award-winning music artist Chloe Bailey also stars in the finale of the podcast series, which was released today. The weekly series first premiered on 6 November and quickly became a hit, currently ranking as the second most popular Kids & Family podcast on Apple Podcasts in the US, next to Starglow Media’s Musicland Stories, according to Chartable.

“We are delighted by listeners’ positive reactions to Season one of ‘Tis The Grinch Holiday Podcast,” said Dr. Seuss Enterprises president-CEO Susan Brandt. “James Austin Johnson has a fresh, unique take on the character in this new medium that fans of all ages and generations can enjoy. We look forward to continuing our partnership with a second season.”

“‘Tis The Grinch Holiday Podcast gave us all a chance to see the Grinch cracking jokes and hobnobbing with celebrities in a totally new medium,” said Wondery chief content officer Marshall Lewy. “We look forward to bringing him back for more Grinchy snark next holiday season.”

Season two of ‘Tis The Grinch Holiday Podcast is set to launch in late 2024 as kids and family podcasts continue to be a substantial area of interest for listeners. According to a consumer study conducted by talent agency UTA on the podcast listening and watching habits of children, nearly half (48%) of US kids aged three to 12 listen to podcasts at least weekly.

The Grinch podcast was created by Wondery as part of its partnership with entertainment company Dr. Seuss Enterprises to adapt its IP into audio through an upcoming slate of podcasts. Other shows that Wondery has developed with Dr. Seuss Enterprises include The Cat in The Hat Cast, which features the iconic book character in a variety-show-style podcast with musical numbers, sketches, and more.
