Warner Bros. Discovery signs partnership agreement with Spotify

Partnership follows similar agreement with Acast in October

Spotify has announced a new partnership agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, the company has announced, to provide podcast hosting and monetisation for a number of the entertainment giant’s portfolio of brands.

Under the new agreements, podcasts from HBO, Max, CNN, CNN en Español, Bleacher Report, WBD Sports, Adult Swim, Turner Classic Movies Network, and truTV will be hosted and distributed via Spotify’s enterprise hosting platform Megaphone. This includes hit podcasts such as All There Is with Anderson CooperOfficial Game of Thrones Podcast: House of the Dragon and HBO’s Succession Podcast.

Spotify also will serve as one of Warner Bros. Discovery’s podcast monetisation partners, allowing brands to access advertising opportunities on its podcasts via the Spotify Audience Network. The two companies have also collaborated on a number of creative projects this year, such as podcasts around the Batman IP like The Riddler: Secrets In The Dark with Colman Domingo.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery announced a similar agreement with Acast, one of Spotify’s key rivals, which saw Acast providing hosting and advertising support for podcasts from a separate subset of Warner Bros. Discovery’s brands, including the Food Network, TLC, HGTV, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, and the Travel Channel.

The announcement follows last week’s sweeping layoffs at Spotify, which affected 17% of the company’s workforce and came after strong third-quarter financial results. It also cancelled fan-favourite podcasts Stolen and Heavyweight, although these cancellations were apparently unrelated to the wider cuts.
