Lemonada Media’s hit interview podcast Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been named Apple Podcast’s Show of The Year for 2023, ahead of its new season next year.
The title is selected by Apple Podcasts’ editorial team and given to a show that has demonstrated quality and innovation in podcasting. The honour previously went to podcasts such as Slate’s Slow Burn, Pushkin Industries’ A Slight Change of Plans with Maya Shankar, and NPR’s Code Switch.
This year, Wiser Than Me was recognised for its work towards amplifying the voices of older women who are often underrepresented in mainstream media. The premise of the show centres around Seinfeld actress and comedian Louis-Dreyfus - who is currently in her early 60s - in conversation with fellow actresses and celebrities who are much older than her including Jane Fonda, Fran Lebowitz, and Isabel Allende.
“All of these women have demonstrated how to live a life,” said Louis-Dreyfus. “That doesn’t mean they didn’t make mistakes, but there’s something about being older where perhaps you feel not as protective in terms of sharing. And so I’ve taken advantage of the intimacy that it offers. That availability to be real and to be open is a great gift.”
Wiser Than Me is produced and distributed by podcast network Lemonada Media. The series launched this year with 10 main episodes and 10 bonus episodes with the same guests that are exclusive to subscribers on the website and on Apple Podcasts through Lemonada’s Premium channel on the platform.
The podcast has been renewed for a second season which is set to launch in the spring of next year, after breaking the record for being Apple Podcasts’ US charts’ number one show for 29 consecutive days. Lemonada co-founder and CEO Jessica Cordova Kramer credit Apple Podcasts for helping the show reach new audiences through the accessibility of the platform.
“Apple does a great job of showcasing diverse shows of different kinds, following whatever's happening in the world and helping people discover new things — not just the most popular things,” said Cordova Kramer. “We love our Lemonada Premium channel because we have a big slate of shows now, and for us, that has been a huge translator of audience overlap.”
In addition to naming its Show Of The Year, Apple Podcasts also recently released its 2023 year-end podcast charts, which placed Diary of A CEO as number one in the UK and Crime Junkie as number one in the US. Wiser Than Me also made it to the top of the charts as the fifth top new show for this year.
