Audio technology company RØDE has acquired rival audio equipment brand Mackie, the company has announced, as part of its ongoing expansion into audio production and mixing hardware.
RØDE microphones have been a perennial favourite of many podcasters, and the company has been expanding into the podcast market for several years through its RØDEcaster serial of all-in-one podcasting and content creation consoles. Mackie, meanwhile, produces a range of professional audio mixers.
Mackie’s brand, manufacturing, and operations will remain unchanged, according to Damien Wilson, CEO of RØDE’s parent company The Freedman Group, although the acquisition will bring in more opportunities for both companies to combine their complementary IP, infrastructure, and resources.
“RØDE and Mackie are incredibly harmonious brands,” said Wilson. “This acquisition diversifies our product offering in a very complementary way. We now offer end-to-end audio solutions for everyone from musicians setting up a home studio to professional live sound engineers.”
The founder and chairman of the company Peter Freedman also added that both RØDE and Mackie have “democratised” DIY recording in their own ways, with the former specialising in microphones such as the NT1 condenser and the latter specialising in mixers and speakers such as the ProFX series of compact mixers. Mackie also specialises in manufacturing products for live sound production, which Freedman also he has a background in.
“Live sound is where I cut my teeth in audio, so this very much feels like that part of my career coming full circle,” said Freedman. “Having met Greg Mackie before I even started RØDE, I found his passion for audio and approach to business inspiring. Their origin story is uncannily similar to ours.”
“We shared a similar path and today both brands are leaders in what we do, so I am incredibly excited to bring these two audio icons together.”
In addition to the acquisition, Mackie CEO Alex Nelson also added that the company will be making big announcements in the lead-up to NAMM 2024, the annual trade-only business show for the global music, sound, and entertainment technology industry, in which vendors display new products and negotiate deals.
“The entire Mackie team is excited to be joining forces with Peter, Damien and their incredible crew,” said Nelson. “Having worked in the audio industry for many years, I have always held RØDE in high esteem.”
“Their manufacturing capability and technology leadership is second-to-none in pro audio and I think they are the perfect partner to help Mackie expand as we enter an exciting new chapter in our history.”
