Audio entertainment company Realm has signed a multi-year partnership with gaming and entertainment platform IGN to collaborate on developing, producing, and distributing several podcasts based on major video game IP, according to Deadline.
As part of the partnership, Realm and IGN will work on adapting first-person shooter High on Life into a scripted podcast series. The game was developed by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, although he will reportedly not be involved in the podcast adaptation following accusations made against Roiland this year for domestic and sexual abuse.
“We’re deeply excited about the opportunity to partner with IGN, a leader in the entertainment and games space, as we continue to find new ways to delight our passionate audiences,” Realm CEO and co-founder Molly Barton. “This deal is an organic extension of our commitment to fan-first storytelling and we believe in the extensive creative and business potential of this mutually beneficial relationship.”
In addition to the podcast adaptation for High on Life and other co-branded new and original content from the companies, Realm will also represent ad sales for IGN’s existing slate of podcasts, including unscripted podcasts such as Nintendo Voice Chat and Unlocked. Realm and IGN will also collaborate to offer brands the opportunity to purchase multi-format packages that allow them to advertise across multiple channels.
Realm specialises in the scripted audio space and has collaborated with a number of partners to create original content including Spotify, Warner Bros, DC, Marvel, and more. Top podcast shows from Realm include Spotify’s Harley Quinn & The Joker: Sound, DC’s The Flash: Escape The Midnight Circus, Realm Original If I Go Missing, The Witches Did It, and more.
“At IGN, we believe that scripted podcasts are a natural extension of games storytelling,” said Karl Stewart, senior vice president of IGN Entertainment's strategic partnerships and innovation division 1TwentyFour. “As a podcasting leader, Realm is a company whose commitment to innovation and creativity lines up with IGN’s vision for this explosive medium.”
“As we look to work with game developers to expand their worlds beyond the screen and between releases, Realm’s passion for the podcasting space truly aligns with ours. We’re excited to get out into the market and start building together.”
IGN has previously worked on creating podcast adaptations and companions of existing video game IPs, including The Callisto Protocol: Helix Station, a tie-in podcast to promote horror video game The Callisto Protocol that launched in December 2022.
