Diary of A CEO is Apple’s number one podcast in the UK for 2023

The Therapy Crouch is the top new show to come out this year, according to charts

Award-winning business podcast Diary of A CEO with Steven Bartlett is the number one most popular podcast on Apple Podcasts in the UK, according to Apple’s 2023 year-end charts. 

The podcast also came second in Edison’s UK Podcast Metrics for Q2 2023, which measures the top 25 podcasts in the region according to total weekly audience reach. The number one podcast in the UK, according to Edison, was The Joe Rogan Experience which does not appear on Apple’s charts thanks to its exclusivity to Spotify. 

Other podcasts that made it to the top five include two shows from independent podcast production company Goalhanger - The Rest is Politics and The Rest is History, which took second and fifth place respectively - Off Menu with Ed Gamble and James Acaster in third place, and Global and Persephonica’s The News Agents in fourth. 

Comedy podcast The Therapy Crouch, hosted by Abbey Clancy and Peter Crouch, also made it to the top 10 list this year, coming in eighth place, despite having only launched in January this year. The podcast was also the number one top new podcast for 2023, followed by Goalhanger’s Leading and The Rest is Football, and others like The News Agents USA

In addition to listing the top podcasts in the UK, Apple’s year-end charts also highlighted the most popular free and subscriber-funded channels in the UK. The top five free channels included BBC Podcasts in first place, which hosts a number of podcasts like A Very British Cult which also made it to the top of the charts this year, followed by Global Originals, The Guardian, Plosive, and iHeartPodcasts. 

The top subscriber channels on Apple Podcasts in 2023 included Amazon-owned podcast company Wondery in first place - which introduced its subscription offering on the app in 2021 for shows like true crime podcasts Dr. Death and The Shrink Next Door - The Rest is Politics which offers incentives like ad-free listening and priority tickets for live events, as well as History Hit, The Times, and Tortoise. 

In the US, Apple Podcasts’ year-end charts differ substantially from the UK, with more local true crime and daily podcasts in the top 10 - including Crime Junkie, followed by The Daily, Dateline NBC, SmartLess, and This American Life. The top new show for 2023 was Lionsgate Sound’s Scamanda, which was also the eighth top new show in the UK charts. 

Other new shows to make it to the list in the US include The New York Times’ The Retrievals, true crime podcast The Deck Investigates, Dateline NBC’s Murder & Magnolias, and Lemonada’s Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. According to Edison Research’s top 25 podcasts chart in the US for Q2 2023, The Joe Rogan Experience was also the number one podcast based on total audience reach. 

The top free channels in the US were also different from the UK, and included iHeartPodcasts, Audiochuck (founded by Crime Junkie co-host Ashley Flowers), The New York Times, Dear Media, and Serial Productions, while the subscriber channels also included Wondery as number one, followed by Dateline NBC, Pushkin, iHeart True Crime, and Lemonada. 

BBC Podcasts was also ranked as the 10th most popular subscriber channel in the US, with offerings including early access to episodes and ad-free listening to popular titles across the network. BBC Studios also announced yesterday that it was expanding the availability of BBC Podcasts Premium on Apple Podcasts to 166 new countries including markets in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and more.
