As podcasting becomes more and more a mainstream medium, it's attracting larger and larger audiences. While the podcasts with focused and devoted audiences are a vital part of the podcast ecosystem, this award looks at those shows which are bringing a mass-market audience to podcasting, and helping introduce more people to audio content.
Winner: Hannah’s Story
Hannah’s Story is a remarkable and important series which digs deep into the horrifying death of Hannah Clarke and her three young children at the hands of her estranged husband. As you would expect, it’s a heartbreaking listen, but an important one, casting a light on a dangerous form of domestic violence that not everyone will be familiar with: coercive control.
Over the course of six episodes, Nine News presenter Melissa Downes and producer Jess Lodge delve deep to understand how the tragedy occurred, and what could have been done to prevent it.
To do this, they speak to family, friends, first responders, witnesses, domestic violence experts and political leaders to get a fully rounded picture of the story in the days, months and years leading up to a crime that shook Australia to its core. More importantly, the podcast asks the question of how the country needs to change to protect others living under coercive control.
