Global content company Ballen Studios, founded by content creator and true-crime podcaster MrBallen, has acquired a new ghost stories podcast from award-winning writer and producer Rodney Barnes, the company has announced.
The series, titled Run, Fool!, is set to launch on 14 November and features Barnes as the host, telling a different horror story every episode about monsters, demons, vampires, and the occult, including use of immersive sound design elements. Barnes is known for his work in the horror genre, having written a number of best-selling books including the Killadelphia comic series.
Run, Fool! is created in partnership with podcast studio At Will Media, which has produced fiction podcasts like Wondery’s Academy and Audible original Possession, and podcast company Campside Media, which is behind award-winning long-running series like Chameleon and Witnessed. At Will Media’s CEO and founder Will Malnati and vice president of originals Rosie Guerin, and Campside Media’s co-founder Matthew Shaer, will serve as executive producers on Run, Fool! alongside MrBallen and Barnes.
“With Run, Fool!, we saw an opportunity to do something new––new not just for the teams at At Will Media, Campside Media, and Ballen Studios, but for the podcast space as a whole,” said Shaer. “The whole idea was, ‘What if we take one of the best writers in the world, and let him spin a diverse and wide-ranging set of ghost stories that totally break the mould for the horror podcast space? And what if we hired a team of incredible sound designers to make it all come alive?’”
Barnes’ podcast series is specifically developed to be adapted into television and film and is represented by talent agency UTA, which also represents Ballen Studios, Campside Media, At Will Media, and Barnes. Ballen Studios’ podcast network includes true-crime series MrBallen Podcast: Strange, Dark & Mysterious Stories, MrBallen’s Medical Mysteries, and Bedtime Stories. A number of other new series are also currently under development and will be announced in the coming months.
“John and I have been huge fans of Rodney for a long time, along with Campside Media and At Will Media,” said Ballen Studios CEO Nick Witters. “The fact that we have the opportunity to partner and springboard this show across the entire Strange, Dark & Mysterious Universe is a beautiful moment for everyone involved.”
In September 2022, MrBallen signed a first-look and distribution deal with Amazon-owned podcast company Wondery, bringing his MrBallen Podcast and other content under Ballen Studios exclusively to the platform.
