Goalhanger expands into fiction with new Sherlock Holmes podcast

Series is written by the creators of Boom, Jackie The Ripper, and The Offensive

Independent podcast production company Goalhanger is expanding into fiction podcasting for the first time with a launch of a new Sherlock Holmes podcast series, the company’s co-founder Gary Lineker announced earlier this week.

“Delighted to welcome two new podcasters to the team, Dr John Watson and his flat mate Sherlock Holmes,” said Lineker, taking to Twitter to share a videa trailer. “Crime is their business. Here’s a taster.”

Sherlock & Co. is set in modern day and written from the perspective of Dr. John Watson, a true-crime podcaster who shares his adventures with Holmes in central London. The podcast plans to cover all 60 of Arthur Conan Doyle’s original short stories, including adventures like The Red Headed League, Silver Blaze, and more.

Sherlock & Co. is written and directed by Adam Jarrell and Joel Emery, also known as ‘Holy Smokes’, the award-winning team behind hit fiction podcasts The Offensive, Jackie The Ripper, and Boom. Emery told PodPod that this podcast aims to bring audio fiction to mainstream audiences worldwide and to highlight the original short stories within the Sherlock universe that are often neglected by Hollywood movie studios and TV drama series.

“The nature of the show and its hyper-realism will hopefully slot into the listening habits of those used to chat and analyse podcasts,” Emery told PodPod. “Like so much of the Goalhanger stable, it's warm, it's engaging and is another brilliant double act in Sherlock and Watson.”

Since launching on Tuesday, the podcast has already climbed to the top of the UK charts - currently at number six on Chartable - and has also specifically gained traction in the US where, according to Emery, audio fiction is more popular with podcast audiences. “Can audio fiction breakthrough with UK podcast listeners... we'll see,” said Emery.

Sherlock & Co marks a new venture for Goalhanger, which is known for creating hit non-fiction podcasts, particularly with its popular ‘The Rest Is…’ franchise which is currently dominating the UK charts. The franchise includes The Rest is Politics with Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart, The Rest is History with Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook, The Rest is Money with Robert Peston and Steph McGovern, and The Rest is Football with Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards.
