The official shortlist for the 2023 Australian Podcast Awards, powered by iHeart, has been announced ahead of the ceremony in Sydney.
Now in its seventh year, the annual event will take place on 21 November at Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour, celebrating excellence in podcasting in the region with a drinks reception following the ceremony for a chance to network and make connections within the industry.
“We love the annual gathering of the Australian Podcast Industry to celebrate the magic of our thriving medium and are proud to once again lead the recognition of those who are doing it best,” said Corey Layton, head of digital audio for ARN’s iHeartPodcast Network Australia.
Commercial radio station ARN, which has invested heavily into the podcasting space with the iHeartPodcast Network, has been nominated for a number of awards this year in 12 categories, including genre-based ones like Best Sport Podcast for The Pool Room with Tony Armstrong and Tradies with Sam McClure and Mitch Cleary, Best Sex & Relationships for Life Uncut, Best Business Podcast for She's On The Money, and others.
ARN is also up for Best Network or Publisher against the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Diversity Arts Australia, DM Podcasts, SBS, and The Squiz, most of which have been nominated across other categories for podcasts they’ve produced. This year also saw some categories dedicated to the business side of the industry including Best Branded Podcast with nominations for brands like Adore Beauty and Bush Heritage Australia, as well as Best Commercial Campaign.
Additionally, this year’s Australian Podcast Awards will also recognise a Rising Star from the industry selected by the judges, a specialist award which last year went to
Justine Landis Hanley, host of politics podcast Left Right Out. Nominees for this year include co-host of comedy podcast Dude Cinema Alex Jae, FremantleMedia Australia development producer Grace Valerie-Lynette, Unemployed & Afraid host Kim Kerton, Coequal host Phillip Crawford, and ARN’s The Pool Room host Tony Armstrong.
Other awards that will be announced on the night of the event and are not eligible for nominations include the Specialist and Spotlight awards, which are selected by the judges from the Gold winners across other categories, and the Podcast Chamion award selected by the APA team. There’s also the Listener’s Choice award, which is voted for by the fans, who have until 18 October to submit votes. The Podcast of The Year award - which is considered the highest honour of the night - will also be announced at the end of the ceremony. The title went to history podcast The Last Outlaws last year.
The Australian Podcast Awards is a sister title to the British Podcast Awards - which took place last Thursday - and the Irish Podcast Awards, which are taking place on 21 November in Dublin supported by Global and Acast and hosted by PodPod.
