BBC 1Xtra is launching a new Black queer podcast, the broadcaster has announced, focused on the intersection between dating and astrology.
The 12-episode podcast, titled Swipe Your Sign is co-hosted by Two Twos podcast’s Ro Frimpong and former Geordie Shore reality star Nathan Henry. Each episode, the pair are matched with potential partners by astrologist Celestial Tree based on their star sign and astrological chart.
“I’m actually honoured to have been a part of something so exciting and something so new and refreshing,” said Henry. “It’s the first podcast of its kind and it’s going to be really interesting to hear what people think of it. I know this may sound biased but out of all the podcasts I’ve ever done, this was the most fun to record! It’s so authentic and the topics we discuss are things I am genuinely so passionate about.”
“‘What star sign are you?’ is the starting dialogue for many queer love stories!” said Frimpong. “I am so honoured to be co-hosting a podcast that has a theme that has never been done before but loads of people would heavily relate to.”
Throughout the series, episodes will also highlight the personal stories and experiences of Black queer individuals across the UK. The series is launching 19 August on BBC Sounds to coincide with this year’s UK Black Pride event in London.
A live version of the podcast will also take place at the UK Black Pride main stage on 19 August with BBC 1Xtra taking over and the Swipe Your Sign team asking the audience to participate in live dates and challenges on stage.
“Astrology has become such an integral part of the queer dating experience,” said Tree. “That’s why Swipe Your Sign has definitely come at just the right time! I’ve absolutely loved bringing my knowledge and passion for astrology to this brand-new podcast, it’s a dream come true!”
Other recent podcast launches from the BBC include the latest season of Michelle Visage’s Rule Breakers podcast, which dropped as a boxset on BBC Sounds on 14 August. The new season features a range of celebrity guests including Jessie Ware, Kesha, Elliot Page, Katie Price, and Melissa McCarthy.
As part of the Premier League season which started last weekend, BBC Sport has also announced the launch of the Football Firsts podcast, co-hosted by football coach and former player Jermain Defoe and professional footballer Troy Deeney.
