Mail Sport is the latest publisher to announce the launch of a new podcast ahead of the opening of the Premier League season, fronted by another pairing of a sports journalist and an ex-player.
The podcast, titled It’s All Kicking Off, promises “a different take on Premier League football”, featuring insights and expertise from co-hosts, Premier League winner and former professional football player Christ Sutton and Daily Mail football editor Ian Ladyman.
Sutton and Ladyman will also interview a number of guests including participants in the Premier League as well as football journalists and former players from Mail Sport’s stable of stars, including Graeme Souness, Stuart Broad, Simon Jordan, Nasser Hussain, Sir Clive Woodward, David Lloyd, Martin Keown, and Danny Murphy.
“I look forward to challenging Ian on some of his ridiculous opinions and calling others, such as Oliver Holt, to account,” said Sutton. “I’ve always got lots to say but we can’t have these reporters getting away with their views unchallenged. Some people in the press have it too easy.”
“I will be doing my best to keep Chris in line as we debate the big stories every Monday,” added Ladyman. “Yes, he played for England and was the British record transfer, but I shall also remind him that he only played once for England and didn’t exactly cover himself in glory at Chelsea. I can’t wait to get started.”
The podcast will launch its first episode on Monday after the Premier League starts on Saturday and will continue to come out weekly. It will be available in audio form on all major podcast platforms, as well as in video on the Daily Mail Sport YouTube page.
It’s All Kicking Off is led by DMG Media’s head of podcasts Jamie East, who was appointed to the role in June this year. East is an experienced podcaster, having co-founded podcast production company Daft Doris with Liam Thompson in 2020 after launching hit daily news podcast The Smart 7. He has also produced a number of podcasts for other companies including The Heat 7 for Bauer Media, as well as shows for other businesses like Samsung, Netflix, and Sky.
“I’m really excited by this,” said East. “Ian and Chris’ friendship, insight and expertise will bring a much needed shot in the arm to the football podcast world. The Rest is Filler.”
Ahead of the Premier League season, a number of other companies and brands have decided to place podcasts as the centre of their sports news coverage including football club West Ham United, which just launched its new official podcast Iron Cast with award-winning podcaster and presenter Chris Scull and former professional footballer James Collins.
Podcast production company Goalhanger also recently launched The Rest is Football, co-hosted by the company’s co-founder and sports broadcaster Gary Lineker and former professional football players and pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, to coincide with the Premier League season.
