Irish public service broadcaster RTÉ has commissioned a second season of children’s podcast Nero’s Class, the show’s creator has announced, which is set to be released in early 2024.
Nero’s Class, which is co-funded by RTEjr and broadcasting regulator Coimisiún na Meán, is a modern-day folk tale which released its first six-episode series in October 2022 and topped Apple Podcasts’ children’s charts for several months after its initial release.
The series is written and produced by author Bobby Aherne and features a number of cast members including comedian Hugh Conney, Elsie Akinduko, Penny O'Dwyer and Rian Sheridan. Special guests that featured on the podcast included comedian Alison Spittle, Peter McGann, and author John Hodgman.
“I'm delighted that Nero and his unruly pupils will be returning for more adventures,” said Aherne. “Now that we've established Mrunglody as an island where anything can happen, I'm as excited as anybody to see what they get up to next. And I'm especially thrilled that Hugh Cooney and his three mega-talented younger co-stars are all onboard and raring to pick up where we left off.”
In addition to Nero’s Class, RTÉ is also working on developing its hit kids adventure podcast Maddie + Triggs into a “multi million pound” animated series featuring the original voice cast, using the first 15 episodes of the podcast as a proof of concept.
RTÉ has developed 26 podcasts for kids and young people since 2019, including teen ‘true-crime’ podcast Cereal which has won a number of awards including exceptional execution of radio play for youth at the Prix Ex Aequo Festival in Slovenia and Gold in the Family Category at the New York Radio Festival. The series has been renewed for a second season, which is currently being written and set to release later this year.
