True-crime podcast Suspect to return for third series next month

Series will be available to binge-listen to for Amazon Prime members

Season three of Wondery and Campside Media’s critically-acclaimed investigative podcast Suspect will be available on all podcast platforms starting 17 July, the company has announced.

The new series titled Suspect: Five Shots in the Dark will investigate the murder conviction of Leon Benson, who was imprisoned in 1998. The podcast follows two parallel investigtions into Benson’s case: one by University of San Francisco law professor Lara Bazelon, assisted by her clinic students and staff attorney Charlie Nelson Keevor, and one by journalist Matthew Shaer, who co-hosts the podcast with Bazelon.

Benson was released from prison in March this year, after it was found that police did did not disclose key evidence pointing to another suspect. It is currently unclear whether Shear or Bazelon’s investigations played a role in his exoneration.

Subscribers of Wondery+ will have early access to episodes one and two of the series on 26 June, with subsequent episodes released twice-weekly. On 17 July, the first two episodes will become available on all podcast platforms and continue to release weekly, while the entire series will be available to binge ad-free for Amazon Prime Music members on that same date.

Suspect has won a number of awards in the past for its narrative story-telling, including Best True-crime Podcast at the 2022 Ambies and Best Writing at the 2023 Signal Awards. Campside Media has also produced a number of other award-winning true crime podcasts including Chameleon: Wild Boys which won podcast of the year at the 2023 Ambies.
