City University to hold free panel discussion on building a podcast career

Industry experts from Unedited, Mags Creative and Acast to join panel

City University of London will be holding a panel discussion on building a career in podcasting on 29 March, with industry experts sharing their experiences and advice on getting into the sector.

The university launched the first-ever dedicated podcasting MA course earlier this year, headed by award-winning broadcaster and the university’s head of podcasting, Sandy Warr. Alongside the MA, City has also launched a Centre of Podcasting Excellence which will hold events with guest speakers, short courses, and monthly in-person events - the first of which being this coming panel discussion.

“It’s been clear to us since launch that the podcasting industry is keen to make a statement about what a great range of careers are available to new talent,” said former Bauer exec and head of the Centre of Podcasting Excellence Brett Spencer. “This is the first in a series of events that will enable students and the industry to come together.”

Industry experts that will be joining the panel discussion in March include Bernard P. Achampong, co-founder of production company Unedited and co-chair of trade association Audio UK, Hannah Russell, founder of podcast production and promotion company Mags Creative, Acast senior vice president Lizzy Pollott, and experienced podcaster Olly Mann, co-host of the British Podcast Award-winning show Answer Me This!

Mann’s Answer Me This! podcast, which he co-hosted with broadcaster and podcast veteran Helen Zaltzman, recently announced that it will be coming back with one special episode answering fan questions on 6 April 2023, after retiring in August 2021.

The panel discussion is free to attend and is open to the public, university staff, prospective and current students, alumni and academics. Applications for the MA in Podcasting are also now open and the course will officially begin its academic year in September 2023.

“The vision is not just about how to make a podcast,” Spencer told PodPod earlier this year. “It's about how to be really compelling in the industry so we can eventually create graduates who can go into a podcast company who have an incredibly rounded skill set and be able to function on a higher level. “
