The Daily Show and LeVar Burton among podcast winners at NAACP Image Awards

54th annual ceremony honours podcasters for second year

The winners of the 54th annual NAACP Image Awards have been announced, including wins in podcast-specific categories for LeVar Burton and The Daily Show, among others.

Set up in 1967 by the US-based civil rights organisation to celebrate excellence in the field of artistic expression from people of colour, the Image Awards added podcasts to its list of categories for the first time last year, with fields for News and Information, Society and Culture, Lifestyle and Self-help, and Arts and Entertainment.

This year’s ceremony, which represents the first fully in-person event since the start of the pandemic in 2020, saw Sherri Shepherd and Kym Whitley of the Two Funny Mamas podcast retain their title for Outstanding Arts and Entertainment Podcast which they won last year. Elsewhere, LeVar Burton Reads- which sees the Star Trek actor revisit his roots as the host of Reading Rainbow - won Outstanding Society and Culture Podcast.

Therapy for Black Girls picked up a gong for Outstanding Lifestyle and Self-help Podcast, while the Outstand News and Information Podcast award went to Beyond the Scenes from The Daily Show, which brings writers, producers and correspondents from the hit comedy current affairs programme together to dig into topics covered by the show in more detail.

While podcasts have only been included in the NAACP Image Awards for the last two years, podcasters can look forward to a number of podcast-specific awards shows later in the year, including the US-based Ambies taking place in March, and the British Podcast Awards from PodPod, which is still open for nominations up until 18 May.
