Joe Rogan, true-crime, and daily news were the top podcasts of Q4 2022

New data from Edison Research reveals Top 50 podcasts in the US by reach

Data from market research and analytics company Edison Research revealed that Spotify’s The Joe Rogan Experience remained as the most popular podcast in the US last quarter. 

The research is based on a ranking system from Edison Podcast Metrics - a quarterly service that provides insight on podcast audiences - which calculated the Top 50 podcasts of Q4 2022 based on weekly audience reach, with a total of 10,597 podcast listeners including the samples from the two previous quarters. 

Within the ranker, the first four podcasts remained unchanged from Q3 with true-crime podcast Crime Junkie remaining in second place while daily news podcasts The Daily and This American Life followed behind respectively. The Joe Rogan Experience was also the most popular podcast on Spotify’s Wrapped list in 2022 and Crime Junkie was the top for Apple Podcasts.

The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro Show dropped from fifth place to sixth and was replaced by true-crime podcast Morbid which is up by three spots since Q3. iHeartPodcasts’ Stuff You Should Know and Exactly Right’s My Favourite Murder also went down this quarter while Office Ladies went up by one. 

Additionally, Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast made it to the top 10 podcasts list in Q4 2022 ranking in eighth place, compared to 11th in the previous quarter, while true-crime podcast Dateline: NBC left the list, going from ninth place to 12th in the latest quarter. 

For the first time, this report included weekly podcast listeners aged 13-17 in order to allow podcast producers and advertisers to understand the teenager and Gen Z demographics of podcast audiences. Edison also previously released a report on the media consumption habits of Gen Z people from 12-24 in the US which revealed that YouTube is the most common discovery source for new podcasts in that demographic. 

Edison plans to release a more in-depth report on the listening habits of Gen Z podcast audiences this quarter in partnership with SXM Media, looking at common habits and motivations of listeners in this bracket.
