HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation to get companion podcast alongside series

Show will be hosted by the video games’ original voice actor Troy Baker

HBO’s The Last of Us will receive an official companion podcast which will be released alongside the forthcoming series, the television network has announced.

The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic survival series starring actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, adapted from the critically-acclaimed 2013 PlayStation video game franchise.

The companion podcast, HBO’s The Last of Us Podcast, will be hosted by the game’s original voice actor, Troy Baker, who will be analysing every episode of the show scene-by-scene and revealing behind-the-scenes stories. Baker will be joined by the show’s creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the latter also having created the original game.

“The three of us will talk to the characters we met, the decisions they made, and how our heroes will struggle to survive in a world where everything is trying to kill them,” said Baker in the podcast’s trailer.

New episodes of the nine-part podcast series will be coming out every Sunday after the show’s official premiere on 15 January.

Mazin is also a co-host on HBO’s official companion show The Chernobyl Podcast speaking about the making of each episode as the series creator, writer and executive producer. HBO has released a range of official companion podcasts for its portfolio of hit original shows in the past which include Succession, Hacks, and Watchmen.

PlayStation has also previously released The Official The Last of Us Podcast limited series in July 2020 which offered an immersive experience exploring the making of the game, similarly featuring Druckmann and Baker alongside other creators involved in the game.

Games media brand IGN previously participated in the podcast companion trend when it launched a tie-in podcast to promote horror video game The Callisto Protocol in December 2022. The Callisto Protocol: Helix Station is a scripted podcast offering a prequel story providing additional context to the game and featured Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie and Starship Troopers actor Michael Ironside.
