Liverpool FC launches first official club podcast

We Are Liverpool will be co-hosted by legendary player Robbie Fowler

Premier League football team Liverpool FC will be launching its first ever official podcast later this month, hosted by broadcaster Peter McDowall and legendary Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler.

The new podcast, titled We Are Liverpool, will interview players from both men’s and women’s teams, as well as previous players and managers for the FA cup-winning team. New episodes will be released fortnightly, with the first season of ten episodes launching on 28 December.

Guests for the first season include current and former players such as James Milner, John Barnes, Andy Robertson, Rylee Foster and Rafael Benitez, with vice-captain Milner leading the first episode.

The show will be released on all major podcast platforms, including YouTube, as well as on the club’s dedicated content streaming service, LFCTV GO. New episodes will be available 24 hours early to those with a free MyLFC membership.

The move comes amid rumours of a potential significant investment in the club, or even an outright sale. The US-based Fenway Sports Group, which owns the club, has said that it would be open to new shareholders under the right conditions, but that it remains fully committed to the club’s success.

Podcasts have become a popular fan engagement tool for sports teams, with clubs including Celtic, Leicester City and Manchester City all running their own official podcasts. Sports fans are a significant category within podcast audiences, with YouGov data from 2020 suggesting that around one in five football fans tune into podcasts on a weekly basis.

Audio-on-demand company Crowd Network also launched a dedicated spots division earlier this year, signing rugby player Sam Warburton as its first major star.
